Philodendron maximum

Big-leaf lovers, meet the heavyweight champion of the Philodendron world. Native to the tropical rainforests of Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, Philodendron maximum is revered for its immense, velvety green leaves that can stretch over three feet long in ideal conditions. Even in indoor cultivation, it delivers architectural, paddle-shaped foliage with a subtle sheen and deeply impressed veins that give each leaf a sculptural presence.

This species belongs to the subgenus Meconostigma, which means it’s self-heading rather than vining—no poles, no sprawling, just a stately, upright habit. Its thick, leathery leaves are an adaptation to its native lowland and montane habitats, helping it withstand fluctuating humidity and intense tropical light. In the wild, P. maximum can form massive clumps over time, anchoring itself with a stout stem and robust root system.

As a collector’s plant, it offers both presence and resilience. It thrives in bright, indirect light, appreciates consistent humidity above 60%, and rewards patience with slow but steady new growth that always feels worth the wait.

Shipping & Acclimation

Your plant will have acclimated at FGMN Nursery for at least 6 weeks before shipping, ensuring it’s strong and stable when it arrives at your door. All plants ship via 2-day shipping, year-round, in secure, insulated packaging to protect against temperature swings. While 2-day is included, we strongly recommend upgrading to 1-day shipping for the fastest, least stressful transit possible—especially during extreme weather.

During the height of summer or depths of winter, it’s normal for a leaf or two to yellow in transit due to temperature stress. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the plant’s health. Minor blemishes or leaf loss can occur in shipping, but your Philodendron maximum will continue producing fresh, healthy growth once settled.
